From First Sketch to Final Sweep: How Charleston Outdoor Design Builds Landscapes That Stand the Test of Time

“From first sketch to lasting beauty. ‘Test of time’ is a phrase I’ve used since day one.” — Marshall Kirkman, President

Why “Design-Build-Maintain” Matters in Charleston
Charleston isn’t just a backdrop — it’s a living coastal ecosystem. Salty air, tidal rains, clay and sandy soils, hurricane seasons, heat, and humidity demand a different standard of landscape. That’s why Charleston Outdoor Design is structured as design, build, and maintain under one roof. Marshall’s horticulture-and-design training means we start on paper, install with precision, and steward the site so it matures gracefully — not just for one summer, but for the long haul.
We serve Charleston, Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, James Island, Isle of Palms, Daniel Island, Sullivan’s Island, North Charleston, Summerville, and the surrounding Lowcountry.

The Horticultural Ethos (Heritage-Aligned)
Marshall is a Charleston native with a degree in Horticulture & Design — a lens that shapes every decision:
• Respect what the site gives you. Preserve healthy canopy trees and viable root zones; design for existing microclimates before importing “solutions” that don’t belong. See Historic Charleston for guidance on heritage landscapes.
• Favor natives and adapted species that withstand salt, heat, humidity, and storm stress. Reference: Native Plants for the Lowcountry (Clemson Extension).
• Design for the mature form. We plan spacing, canopy spread, airflow, and maintenance access upfront — on a scaled plan set, not a napkin sketch.
• Everything except the house. We don’t mow — we maintain: gardens, hedges, beds, edges, lighting, irrigation, drainage, seasonal color, and soil health.
“We are a design, build, and maintain company. We specialize from start to finish… design on paper so you can visualize, then install — landscaping, irrigation, drainage — and ultimately maintain the property and keep it beautiful long-term.” — Marshall, founder of Charleston Outdoor Design.
Our Process: From Concept to Completion
1) Site Walk & Story
We start on your property — sun, wind, water, soil. We note assets (live oaks, palmettos, legacy camellias), pain points (standing water, compacted beds), and lifestyle patterns (pool traffic, porch life, pets). Your routine matters as much as the soil test.
Deliverable: documented goals, constraints (historic boards, view corridors, easements), and preliminary photos.
2) Concept → Plan (on Paper)
We translate ideas into scaled drawings you can actually see. Groupings respect plant families, root competition, and hydrozones; irrigation and lighting are planned to the plan — not guessed in the field.
Deliverable: plan set + materials palette (plant list, stone, lighting), with phasing if needed.
3) Build with Precision
Hardscape layout, base prep, planting, irrigation, lighting, and drainage are executed by specialists. We protect root zones, set proper grades for coastal drainage, and commission systems so coverage and pressure match the plan (no overspray, no dry pockets). Read Irrigation Best Practices (Clemson HGIC).
Deliverable: an install that looks great day one and is structurally sound for year five, ten, fifteen.
4) The Final Sweep (and the Long Game)
We leave the site pristine — and then the real work begins: estate-level maintenance. Seasonal pruning, soil nutrition, bed definition, mulch management, irrigation checks, drainage health, lighting audits, and enhancement planting keep the property at its peak.

Where creativity meets construction.
Once the plan is set, our team turns sketches into structure.
Each project moves seamlessly from design to build — blending craftsmanship, premium materials, and decades of local experience.
Whether it’s stonework, lighting, irrigation, or plant installation, every phase is handled by specialists who know that beauty only lasts when built right.
That’s why we’re hands-on through every detail — not just to create something stunning, but to ensure it stands the test of time.
Built to Endure
A finished landscape isn’t the end — it’s the beginning of stewardship.
Through our maintenance programs, we nurture each property long after installation, keeping it healthy, vibrant, and true to its original design.
Our team understands Charleston’s seasons, soil, and storms. We manage irrigation systems through heat waves and freezes. We prune with intention — never hacking or shaping without purpose — and refresh plantings so they mature naturally with time.
Maintenance isn’t just upkeep; it’s protection. It’s the quiet work that ensures a landscape grows stronger, fuller, and more beautiful each year.
That’s how we measure success — not by how a property looks on install day, but how it feels ten years later.
Rooted in the Lowcountry
We don’t just work in Charleston — we’re part of it.
Our projects stretch from historic downtown courtyards to coastal retreats on Kiawah Island and Daniel Island, each designed with the same respect for heritage and place.
This city has a way of demanding authenticity.
You can’t fake craftsmanship in a town built on 300 years of it.
That’s why we focus on details that last — proper grading, native plant selection, thoughtful drainage, and quality materials that age gracefully.
When you walk a Charleston Outdoor Design property, you feel the difference.
It’s refined but relaxed, timeless but alive — the kind of space that invites you to slow down, breathe deep, and stay awhile.
